Fascinated by electronic arts, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer has developed an artistic practice around the concept of "relational architecture" using technologies such as robotics and electronic surveillance. His approach seeks to distract the user from his familiar urban environment by proposing him a new reading of the latter. He thus translates his desire to create social experiences in which performances and meetings occur through new technologies.

Inspired by animatronics, Mexican phantasmagoria and carnival culture, his works of shadows and lights, like his other large scale interventions, are anti-monument manifests. On a smaller scale, his installations and other digital impressions explore specific themes such as perception, deception and surveillance.
